At Accent Studio, our primary concern is to ensure the long-term preservation and protection of your artwork. Over the years, our staff has handled a wide variety of art made from a vast array of materials. It is our belief that every piece of art requires individual consideration to determine the best frame, matting and mounting choice.
In framing, the materials that come in contact with your art are of the greatest importance. Using non-archival materials or inappropriate mounting methods can result in unnecessary damage and possible decrease in the value of your artwork. Reversibility of framing is essential in what we do … our process is all about creating the best long-term environment for your treasured keepsakes.
Our mat board of choice is rag or alpha-cellulose. Accent Studio recommends the use of archival-quality mat boards. Materials used at Conservation Framing Services—such as museum quality rag mat boards in a variety of widths and natural tones—are designed to protect and preserve your artwork. They are not only acid free but are designed to absorb acid from the art as well as the environment. Photographic work, for example, requires a specially treated museum board, formulated specifically for its photochemical make-up.
Backing boards help insure longevity of your artwork. We use acid-free foam board or Bainbridge® Artcare™ Archival Foam Board because it features MicroChamber® technology which absorbs and neutralizes harmful gases before they damage your art. Its neutral pH surface features an opaque, lightly textured acid-free surface paper that helps to eliminates show-through and features a soft white color that is suitable for floating applications.
As with the selection of matting and frames, hinging must be tailored to the artwork. Hinging is the process of attaching works on paper to a backing board. Depending on the weight of the paper, an appropriate hinge is chosen that will support the piece without restricting its natural movement. All hinges are made from acid-free Japanese papers utilizing adhesives that are also acid-free and completely reversible.
